Goumin — Heartbreak / Lovesickness

Goumin is a fantastic slang word you won't find in your French textbook! It comes from Nouchi, a slang from CĂ´te d'Ivoire, and it means 'heartbreak' or 'lovesickness'.

In the song, the artist warns someone, "Ça va t'apprendre à kouma... goumin" (That'll teach you to talk... heartbreak), implying that their actions will lead to this intense, painful feeling. It's a powerful and evocative word that shows the influence of African cultures on modern French music.

Get ready for some serious confidence! In "Simba," French-Comorian artist Dr. Yaro compares himself to the prince from The Lion King. He's not just any guy; he's royalty arriving on the scene. He declares, "J'arrive en Prince / Comme Simba" (I arrive like a Prince / Like Simba) and insists, "J'ai le dernier mot" (I have the last word). This isn't just a boast; it's his whole attitude. He sees himself as a leader, someone you should follow without question.

He uses this princely charm on a woman who is completely captivated by him. He says, "La petite est matrixée" (The girl is mesmerized), as if she's under a spell. He's so confident in his power over her that he even warns others about it. But there's a twist! Despite all his control, he admits she has an effect on him too, singing "Ma belle / Tu m'as rendu mabé" (My beautiful / You made me crazy/bad). It's a fun, swaggering track about power dynamics in a relationship, all built around one of the most famous princes in pop culture.

Dr. Yaro, born Mohamed Ertan, is a French rapper of Comorian origin who grew up between the 19th arrondissement of Paris and Blanc-Mesnil, just outside the capital.

He started writing and rapping at 14, and his friends nicknamed him "Doctor" for his perfectionism in the studio and his obsessive attention to detail. He first made his name alongside his cousin in the duo Dr. Yaro & La Folie, whose freestyle series caught the attention of established stars like KeBlack, Naza, and Gims in 2017.

Dr. Yaro launched his solo career in 2023, quickly landing a feature on Stromae's album Multitude before releasing his own singles "Caramelo" and "Minimum ça." The latter became a massive hit across France, Belgium, Senegal, and Ivory Coast, turning the confident, hard-earned bragging of "Minimum ça" into one of the biggest French rap anthems of the year.
