perdido el norte — lost our way / lost direction

Perdido el norte literally means “lost the north,” but it is a Spanish idiom for losing your direction, clarity, or sense of what to do. In the song, “Hemos perdido el norte” describes a relationship that has become confused and emotionally directionless, making this a vivid and memorable expression to learn.

“STONE ISLAND” drops us into a cold, loveless world: “En mi zona no hay amor, no hay amor, frío y neblina” [In my area there is no love, no love, cold and fog]. The narrator is leaving with spare clothes and a bottle of Zacapa, a rum brand, strapped to his luggage rack. “Hoy ganan los impulsos” [Today, impulses win] tells us he is acting first and thinking later. He and this woman still have intense sex, but trust has collapsed, so he insists that they are not a couple. The repeated “entre tú y yo no hay amor” [between you and me there is no love] sounds like a rule he keeps repeating to stop her, and perhaps himself, from expecting more. The Stone Island reference names a clothing brand, and the blunt line about cleaning himself on his Stone Island jacket makes the breakup feel messy, reckless, and deliberately tasteless.

There is more history underneath the bravado. They once loved each other and supported each other, but “se acabó” [it is over]. Now she calls on FaceTime, cancels plans while half-dressed, and says she is tired when she really means she is sad. He notices every contradiction, even while claiming not to care about her suspicions when his phone is out of battery. Their arguments turn physical and absurd, with him telling her to lower the fork before asking what happened. He admits, “Hemos perdido el norte” [We have lost our direction], and says he does not even know what he feels. The song’s tension comes from that clash: he keeps saying there is no love, while the lyrics show two people who still watch, worry, argue, sleep together, and cannot quite cut the connection.
