tumbao — swagger/rhythm/groove

Tumbao is a vibrant, culturally rich word with no single direct translation in English. It captures a sense of swagger, rhythm and natural groove, a distinctive way of walking, dancing or simply carrying oneself with confidence.

In "La negra tiene tumbao" ("The dark girl has that swing"), the word celebrates an effortless, rhythmic confidence that comes from within, something felt in every step rather than something that can be taught.

The whole song is built on a borrowed line. "La negra tiene tumbao" [the dark girl has that swing] is Celia Cruz, and Beyonce keeps it running underneath everything like a pulse she refuses to turn down. Around it she builds a countdown. "Paso uno, vamos a bailar" [step one, let's go dance], then step two is "Que me traigan ese whiskey y pongan mi cancion" [have them bring me that whiskey and put my song on]. By step four there is a vintage Rolls and a couple of hundreds dropped on the way out the door. It is a night out planned like a heist.

Maluma answers in the middle with the flirting, and Beyonce takes the last word twice over. "Saben que soy jefe aqui" [they know I am the boss around here] is the thesis, and "Quieren mi flow, ser como yo" [they want my flow, to be like me] is the shrug that follows it. Then she switches to English and undercuts her own performance with "My Spanish is not very good looking", which is the funniest line on the track and probably the most honest one. The instruction underneath all of it never changes: "Parate y rompe el cuerpo" [get up and break it down].
