Desamor is a powerful word that literally translates to 'un-love' or 'lack of love', but it's often used to mean 'heartbreak' or 'falling out of love'. It's formed by adding the prefix des-, which negates the word, to amor (love).
In this iconic bachata, the singer tells Cupid he's done with romance. He feels he has received "la fortuna del desamor" (the fortune of heartbreak) as an inheritance, a beautifully ironic line expressing his constant bad luck in love.
In "Dile Al Amor", Dominican bachata kings Aventura file a formal complaint against Cupid. The narrator calls out the mythical archer for bragging about connecting hearts while totally missing the target on his own romantic life: "Te fallaron las flechas" ("Your arrows failed you"). After giving away countless violets without keeping a single flower in his own garden, he is officially done. He tells Cupid to act as a bouncer and send romance away with a strict message: "Dile al amor que no toque mi puerta / Que yo no estoy en casa" ("Tell love not to knock on my door / That I am not home").
Instead of wallowing forever, he takes a drastic break. He announces, "Me fui de vacaciones / Lejos de los amores" ("I went on vacation / Far away from lovers") and literally cancels romance from his routine. That means zero dates on his calendar, no love songs, and no flowers. He even uses a great everyday phrase when he says "Tengo a dieta los sentimientos" ("I have my feelings on a diet"), starving his heart of affection just to dodge another disappointment. It is a wonderfully dramatic, anti-Valentine anthem where the singer decides that dodging Cupid's arrows is way safer than getting burned again.
Aventura played Dominican bachata the way it sounded in the Bronx, where they formed as teenagers under the name Los Tinellers. The genre's guitar figures got pulled toward R&B and hip hop, and English kept slipping into the Spanish mid-verse. Anthony "Romeo" Santos sang lead in a high, pleading tenor, Henry Santos sang alongside him, Lenny Santos wrote the guitar parts and Max Santos played bass.
"Obsesión", from We Broke the Rules (2002), spent sixteen straight weeks at number one in Italy and seven in France, which is not where a bachata single was supposed to end up. God's Project (2005) carried "La Boda", "Un Beso" and "Ella y Yo" with Don Omar, and The Last (2009) reached number five on the Billboard 200 behind "Dile al Amor" and "El Malo". They split in 2011, Romeo going solo while Lenny and Max formed Vena, then reunited in 2019 for "Inmortal" and took "Volví" with Bad Bunny to number one on Hot Latin Songs in 2021. The farewell Cerrando Ciclos tour closed in January 2025 with four stadium nights in Santo Domingo.
