"Confiar en Alguien" by the Spanish band Amaral is a stubborn little declaration of independence. The singer comes home late and pictures her partner asleep, then admits something awkward: "no me acostumbro a dormir al lado de nadie" (I can't get used to sleeping next to anyone).

The verses push back at people who want to package her. "No estuve en el casting de estrellas de rock" (I wasn't in the rock-star casting) and "No soy marioneta en este baile" (I'm not a puppet in this dance) are blunt and a bit cheeky. Marchantes de arte are art dealers, the people who put a price on things. Her line "Mi vida es un vuelo sin motor" (my life is a flight without an engine) means gliding: no plan, just drifting.

The chorus is the twist. She begs "Déjame vivir a mi manera" (let me live my way), yet ends on "Necesito confiar en alguien" (I need to trust someone). Freedom and needing someone at the same time, and the song doesn't pretend to solve it. Useful grammar: que me creas and que me entiendan use the subjunctive after necesito and quiero.
